Identify Any Package in Ubuntu with the Ubotu IRC Bot

Ubuntu users: When you try to compile and install an application from source, occasionally you will run into missing packages that you just can’t seem to find with apt. A tool exists in the form of an IRC bot that can help you locate exactly what package you need to install. All you need to do is fire up your favorite IRC client (XChat for instance) and send Ubotu a message from any channel with the following syntax: /msg ubotu find package.pc

Replace “package” with the package you are trying to locate. Ubotu will give you a response in about 10 seconds with exactly the package you need. Additionally, as shown above, you can also throw other search phrases at Ubotu and get pretty good results.

Avoid These 10 Resume Annoyances

We’ve covered a ton of resume do’s at Lifehacker, but AOL Jobs highlights 10 resume don’ts that are likely to get under your hiring manager’s skin. For example:

Outdated information. Leave off the activities that you did in high school if graduation was a few years ago and omit jobs you held 10 or more years ago, as the information is probably irrelevant to the position you’re trying for now.

If we’ve got any hiring readers, we’d love to hear your tips for resume additions that get on your nerves.

Blog, Twitter and Schedule with Your Voice Using Jott

Now you can post to your blog or Twitter account, schedule an appointment or post to a Yahoo Group with previously mentioned voice-to-text phone service Jott. Jott can now transcribe voice notes and post them to WordPress, TypePad, LiveJournal and Blogger; for social updates, Jott now integrates with Twitter and Jaiku; and for scheduling, there’s 30 Boxes support (please to add Gcal?). Somewhat less exciting, you can also post to Yahoo Groups and get real estate estimates from Zillow. We’ve heard both positive and negative feedback from readers about the accuracy of Jott transcriptions, but with all of the new web integration, there’s no question that Jott’s making huge strides in innovation. Thanks Bryce!

Create Quick-Switch Custom Layouts with the Keyboard Layout Creator

Windows only: Define and switch between custom keyboard layouts with the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator, a freeware download from Microsoft. Let’s say, for example, you type a lot of accented letters or you’re thinking about switching to a Dvorak keyboard layout; with the Keyboard Layout Creator, you can keep your traditional Qwerty keyboard, but quickly toggle to your new custom layout at any time using the Caps Lock button (most of us hardly use it anyway). When you’re done with the alternate layout, just toggle Caps Lock again and you’re back to your main layout. The software can be a little tough to wrap your head around, so take a look at this US/German template after you install KLC to get an idea of how it works. Thanks xeen!
